Candoco Dance Company is the contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers.
At the heart of our work are our national and international productions, created by world class choreographers for audiences to enjoy. Alongside these, through our Learning projects and activities we provide access to the highest quality of work for people participating in contemporary dance for pure enjoyment, or as part of a developing career.
We are a passionate, dedicated team of people and we want to show you what dance can be, and who can dance.
We are curious about what dance can be, how we can provide new ways into dance and how our company of disabled and non-disabled dancers can change and reimagine perceptions of ability.
When we commission choreographers we look for someone who shows an interest in exploring movement, investing in the dancers’ movements and challenging them further. We are interested in work that reveals something about the people on stage; that brings out the human. It is important to us that you see the dancers through the choreography. We believe this combination of choreographers’ vision and dancers’ input captures a form of collaboration that sits at the heart of Candoco.
We deliberately choose artists with a variety of approaches to choreography so that the works remain fresh, bold and unexpected. We want to present choreographers who question their own practice and engage with pushing the boundaries of the art form and how it is presented on stage. Candoco provides the audience with a journey through contemporary dance, pioneered, re-interpreted and presented through our own particular lens.
These ambitions are driven by an understanding that diversity is inherently exciting and most likely to lead to the next great idea. We want to continue pushing our own and others’ ambitions for what disabled dancers can do and involve as many talented artists as we can on this journey. This commitment puts learning at the heart of everything we do – as we must ensure there is room for different bodies, perspectives and experiences within dance.
All our work, from performances by our professional and youth companies, to our workshops, regular classes, intensives and training modules, seeks to make a long term change in the vibrancy of dance and the range of dancers you see on stage.
