English writer and painter who was involved with the Surrealist movement during the 1930s. Carrington spent time in a Spanish insane asylum after her lover Max Ernst, was sent to a concentration camp in 1939. Three years after being released from the asylum she wrote about her experience of the hospital and of psychosis in her novel ‘Down Below’. She also created art to depict her experience, such as her Portrait of Dr. Morales and Map of Down Below
