Don’t worry… Breathe… Draw.

Trees and house drawing

Provence, 2016. Pencil and coloured pencil on paper. 25 x 17 cms
Dedicated to my daughter, Katherine, without whose support and encouragement this drawing wouldn’t exist.

It’s Unlimited time again. Another chance for disabled artists to get their stuff out there to wider audiences. Or, in many cases I suspect, the best if not the only opportunity to be able to afford to do their work at all.

Not that I know anything about it. My art is too wispy for me to go anywhere near Unlimited. I’m glad simply to be able to wield a pencil these days. Honest.

Once again, the call for submissions has gone out and, from the blurb, it’s clear they don’t mean me.

We are looking for quality, innovation and ambition across everything we commission.

See? I don’t tick any of their boxes.

Not that my work isn’t quality, in its own way. If you like that sort of thing.

But it’s not, by any stretch of the imagination, innovative; there’s nothing new going on here. It’s old school, sit down, look and draw.

Nor is my work ambitious. It’s not going anywhere. Like me, it’s grateful to be here, alive and breathing.

The feature I like most in my work is air. I realised this when looking at the drawing here. That said, I’m not sure if air is what the audience will see.

What do you see? How does it make you feel?

When I draw I’m in another state where time doesn’t exists, I don’t exist. There’s only hand, eye, pencil. And air.

Breathe. Look. Make marks. That’s it.

No fear.

Air by Talking Heads from the album Fear of Music. (Lovely bass by Tina Weymouth – turn it up)

Air…Air
Hit me in the face
I run faster
Faster into the air
(I say to myself)
What is happening to my skin?
Where is that protection that I needed?
Air can hurt you too
Air can hurt you too
Some people say not to worry about the air
Some people never had experience with…
Air…Air
It can break your heart
So remember when the weather gets rough
(You’ll say to yourself)
What is happening to my skin?
Where is that protection that I needed?
Air can hurt you too
Air can hurt you too
Some people say not to worry about the air
Some people never had experience with…

Air…air

You know how to put enough detail in using shadow and cross-hatching Debz. My drawing seems to have dried up of late. I miss that sense of total absorption you get… especially when it has nothing to do with looking at a screen. So, I’m with you totally… but I don’t see why you think your work isn’t good enough for Unlimited?

First of all Debz, I love the ‘airy’ ethereal quality of this piece. I think there’s a certain haunting, brooding tension in your work generally, which I think you could explore even further by linking a series together of autobiographical ‘moments’ – haunting, troubling, ponderous. Perhaps juxtaposed with some fictionalised scenes as well… Secondly, with the greatest respect to Unlimited, don’t pay too much heed to the jargon on application forms. Just like anything, it’s a game with hoops you have to jump through. You just have to learn to play the game…it’s like anything – like passing tests at… Read more »

Enjoy the DAO encouragement Debz. Don’t worry about it as I do. But do think about it. Colin and Joe know what they’re talking about. I don’t.
