Access All Areas makes award winning, disruptive performance by learning disabled artists.

We work nationally and locally to develop powerful learning disabled creative voices that challenge public perceptions of learning disability, and bring excellent and
innovative new performance work to UK audiences. Our work is fuelled by a desire to realise an artistic practice that includes and celebrates learning disabled experiences and voices, not as a social exercise but as an artistic necessity.

We believe passionately that putting learning disabled voices at the heart of the UK arts scene will create an artistic canon that is made more vibrant, more varied and more relevant by including a range of perspectives.

Our mission is divided into three strands: immersive productions, artist development and take part.

Access All Areas was formed in 1976 as The Rainbow Theatre Group. Under the leadership of current Artistic Director Nick Llewellyn, the organisation rebranded in
2007. In June 2017, Access All Areas was accepted into Arts Council England’s National Portfolio.

Main responsibilities include:

Artistic

  • Strategic management of the Take Part and Train programme, overseeing the running of all projects and supervising the Projects Coordinator
  • Acting as course leader on the Performance Making Diploma
  • Developing curriculum for Performance Making Diploma course and working with visiting lecturers at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama realise this curriculum
  • Devising and directing large scale participatory performances
  • Workshop leading / facilitating on various workshop programmes such as the Performance Making Diploma, Departure Lounge and others
  • Designing and leading on audience engagement programme aligned to professional productions
  • Management of AAA’s pool of freelance creative workshop leaders ensuring quality creative participation is delivered across all projects

Access

  • Leading strategically on embedding access throughout all Take Part and Train projects
  • Devising and implementing the Company-wide Access strategy (including accessibility on the Board of Trustees)
  • Line-managing the Access and Training Coordinator who works directly with participants to complete support plans, ways of working and Circles of Support
  • Overall responsibility for the recruitment for all new participants and project pathways within and outside Access All Areas
  • Devising and delivering inclusive/access training programmes for theatres and arts organisations
  • Researching and understanding existing access provision in the arts industry, including maintaining a working knowledge of peer organisations

Planning and development

  • Developing company-wide participation and outreach strategy for both Take Part and Train and Professional projects
  • Developing Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) programme, including fundraising and selling EHCP programmes to parents and carers
  • Designing and developing new accredited curriculums in partnership with Artistic Director and with other agencies/partners
  • Working with the Access and Training Coordinator and Operations Manager on developing curriculums for different workshop models to generate income
  • Training AAA’s Ambassadors to co-deliver workshops

Fundraising and reporting

  • Writing evaluation reports for funders, gathering monitoring data from Projects Coordinator
  • Fundraising and grant writing for Take Part and Train in association with Operations Manager and Executive Producer

Finance and HR

  • Controlling budgets of specific projects and liaising directly with operations team, adhering to financial systems
  • Managing and developing the Access and Training Coordinator and supervising the Projects Coordinator to deliver delegated activities from the annual plan
  • Abiding by and implementing all of Access All Areas’ policies including health and safety, safeguarding and equal opportunities policies
  • Acting as Safeguarding Officer, sharing good practice throughout the organisation and leading on referrals

Brand and external relations

  • Leading on brand and external relations for Take Part and Train activities
  • Fostering meaningful relationships in health, social care and education sectors to build participant recruitment strategy and partnership working
  • Working alongside commissioners to refer young people with learning disabilities to our bespoke 18-25 year-old programmes
  • Representing the organisation at industry events and presenting publicly about the organisation’s work

Governance

  • Attending Board meetings to report on specific projects as requested by Artistic Director/CEO and Board
  • Advocating for steering groups and individual learning disabled trustees where appropriate
  • Ensuring all trustees have a valid DBS check

Person Specification

Essential

  • At least 3 years’ experience of working in the arts
  • Experience of working in participatory arts settings, particularly with people with learning disabilities
  • An understanding of access issues and meeting individual support needs
  • Experience of workshop leading / facilitation
  • Experience of impact measurement
  • Experience of monitoring and evaluation frameworks
  • Experience of managing other staff
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Experience of safeguarding practice and a solid understanding of safeguarding procedures

Desirable

  • Some theatre directing experience
  • Experience of managing project budgets
  • Experience of teaching in a drama school setting
  • Experience of managing a team of freelance workers and volunteers
  • Some experience of develop outreach strategies
  • Some experience of fundraising, in particular of writing grant applications
