Access Platform is a new writing night platforming 5 D/deaf and disabled writers at Vault Festival 2019.
We know there is not enough D/deaf and disabled representation on our stage and screens. There are huge organisations that are addressing this, but there isn’t a lot at fringe level. Fringe theatre is such an important step in an arts career and we want to give D/deaf and disabled talent a chance to shine in front of a paying audience and industry professionals. Access Platform is curated and produced by disabled dramaturgs; director Stephen Bailey and playwright Amy Bethan Evans.
Who Can Apply
Anyone who self-identifies as D/deaf and/or disabled under the social model of disability and is eligible to work in the EU. We don’t need proof or details of your impairment, just confirmation that you self-identify.
How to Apply
Please submit a 5-10 minute (complete) piece of theatre with 1 or 2 characters to AccessPlatformVaults@gmail.com before 31st January 2019. Please Include your phone number if you use the phone. Plays can be on any subject matter.
What Happens Next
We (Amy and Stephen) will direct and dramaturg your piece for 2 performances at Vaults in front of a paying audience and industry professionals.
Rehearsals will be the weeks of 4th/11th of March (dates tbc). You don’t need to physically be there if it’s too difficult, but it would be great if you were available to chat to about the script.
We’re offering £20 per script plus some assistance with travel costs for writers coming from outside London. Please contact Amy Bethan-Evans on email@example.com
We will endeavour to cast predominantly D/deaf and disabled actors and will certainly aim to cast them D/deaf and disabled roles. However, you may have to bear with us. The fringe scene presents barriers to D/deaf and disabled artists, which can make them hard to find. We want to change that by doing this platform.
We will select our 5 pieces from a shortlist of 15. Everyone on the shortlist will get a full script report and we will aim to get some sort of feedback to everyone who submits.
Access Platform are grateful to be supported by Graeae, The Bunker, Ovalhouse, Camden People’s Theatre and Southwark Playhouse. We are currently applying for additional funding from ACE.
