Theatre Royal Plymouth is seeking a freelance Assistant Director for our 2019 People’s Company show (currently untitled). This will be a devised piece, developed from scratch with and for the People’s Company, to be performed in The Drum, week commencing 1st July 2019.
Through the overall project process there is opportunity therefore to gain an insight in to how a brand new piece begins and develops with input from community groups; how it transforms from initial idea to realised production.
Interviews will be held on Monday 21 January 2019.
About the Role
Through this post the Assistant Director will gain experience alongside a professional director in a professional theatre. You will work closely with the Director, Lucy Hirst, and be privy to all aspects of the creative process where possible.
Applicants should have a keen interest in the craft of directing and in particular developing new work from scratch. You should be interested in developing your understanding of creative collaboration, particularly with community groups being central to the process.
The Assistant Director will provide dramaturgical support alongside the core creative team. Strong organisation skills are essential and you should be comfortable documenting material generated during workshops and transcribing content for potential future use.
You should be comfortable working alongside a group of adults from a variety of backgrounds and with differing levels of experience. Applicants should be interested in fostering a collaborative and supportive approach to developing work.
There will be opportunity for the Assistant Director to converse with the Director and receive mentoring on the process.
– Two development workshops will take place in February 2019
– Auditions then take place in March 2019
– Rehearsals commence late-April 2019
– Production week is w/c 1st July 2019.
The Assistant Director will need to be available for the auditions and all rehearsals leading up to the performances, including tech week. Please see the attached rehearsal schedule.
