UK Disability History Month

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) has been an annual event since 2010, creating a platform to focus on the history of disabled peoples’ struggle for equality and human rights.

Every year UKDHM has focussed on a different theme and this year the emphasis is on Disability and Music, exploring the links between the experience of disability in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming.

To quote the launching UKDHM 2018 Broadsheet, documenting the stories of a range of great disabled musicians throughout history: “The creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future.”

Over the coming month DAO will publish a range of features reflecting our Disability History. For more information about UK Disability History Month visit
