Written by Richard Downes
From time to time i will write a topical poem, store it away in my data bank and publish years later after the event. I’m going to stop this practice now and stay up to date. Here’s one on the winter fuel issue inspired by prompts from the Daily Haiku which were as follows; words, harvest, sky, sea and family. Their weekly theme was ancient.
Early Man
The earliest man
Primordial primeval
Struck up the first fire
Without winter allowance
For fuel from Rachel Reeves
He worked for himself
Knowing things would get harder
Everything would break
In the words of Keir Starmer
The harvest the tories reaped
Early man watches
Clouds scudding across the sky
Noting their colours
Hoping for sun fearing rain
A cold wet winter coming
He piled on clothing
Hoping somehow to find warmth
Careful with pennies
Afraid of his smart meter
He felt waves of nausea
And he felt concerned
Not just for himself either
His brothers sisters
The true cost of poverty
Propping up the ‘broad shoulders’
