Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) is a pioneering arts complex for everyone with the mission to make art an important part of people’s lives.
Located in Cannon Hill Park, just two miles south of Birmingham city centre, MAC attracts over 1,000,000 visits every year, drawing audiences from across the UK and beyond.
Specialising in contemporary work, MAC offers a busy programme of theatre, dance, independent cinema, music, comedy, art exhibitions and a range of Relaxed and accessible performances and events.
Our education programme welcomes the disabled community with a wealth of practical classes/ courses in all aspects of creativity, from playing musical instruments to ceramics and jewellery-making.
We recommend prospective disabled students contact us in advance of joining a course to discuss specific requirements. Students can be accompanied by their carer or support worker, who must book a complimentary ticket if attending a course to provide support.
We are currently unable to provide one to one support, though courses for under 18s are run with the help of Learning Support Workers who can provide pastoral care for the group.
If you are not sure if a course is suitable we can arrange for you to attend a free taster session and meet the tutor to discuss any specific needs. We have one fully adjustable, wheelchair-accessible pottery wheel, and two wheels with lower seating in our pottery studio (and we are currently in the process of having building work done on a new accessible artist studio and improvements to our pottery studio to make it more accessible).
Our MAC Makes Music programme is specifically designed for young aspiring disabled musicians to get involved with music-making. The award-winning programme provides innovative music-making opportunities for children and young people with limited access to music provision.
MAC is a national leader in developing work with children, families and young people of all backgrounds.
In terms of facilities, a full outline of MAC’s accessibility as a venue can be found here.
Beyond the touring and self-produced programme, MAC works extensively to support emerging and mid-career artists.
