On the last weekend of January, Shallal arts charity is delighted to be filling Newlyn Art Gallery with visual art, installation and dance to showcase their diverse talents. The event will be the culmination of three major projects over the past year; Shallal Dance Theatre’s ‘Here and Now’ pioneering improvised dance tour; Shallal’s annual combined arts residency at Back Lane West Redruth and Shallal Studios’ ‘Expanding Limits’ visual art project based at Krowji creative hub. “This will be Shallal Studios’ first major exhibition since we opened at Krowji in September 2019 and we can’t wait to show audiences the range of exciting work that has been made already, inspired by our ‘Here and Now’ dance project”. Said arts facilitator Lou Brett.
Expect to see bold, expressive visual art on the gallery walls as well as an immersive light installation by light artist Peter Freeman in the downstairs gallery. Peter makes light sculptures and installations using neon and LEDS to create “luminous contemporary forms that radiate colour and light into the surrounding space”. Peter started working with Shallal in 2019 and will continue to collaborate with them throughout 2020.
There will be two chances to see the final ‘Embodied Space’ performance of Shallal Dance Theatre’s ‘Here and Now’ tour, described by audience members last summer as “mind-blowing, soul-moving, powerful performance”. Audiences will be treated to an immersive performance in the downstairs gallery where light installation, improvised soundscapes and dance come together. These performances will take place on Friday at 1:30pm and Saturday at 3pm. There is no need to book to see the performances and the whole event is admission free with donations welcome.
Shallal would like to thank funders Arts Council England, The Rix Thompson Rothenberg Foundation, The National Lottery Community Fund and Cornwall Community Foundation Lord St Levan Fund for their support.
