Blue Cabin is a Community Interest Company. We improve the experience and relationships of children and young people who are (or have been) care experienced through participation in creative experiences. We achieve this by working in partnership with the organisations who have a corporate parenting responsibility for them. We deliver training and prioritise research and evaluation so that we can learn from what works (and what doesn’t) in order to influence national policy.

We are currently seeking up to 4 new trustees as we become a Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

We would especially love to hear from you if you identify as being care experienced, as we want to make sure that our organisation is led by the community we serve.

Please don’t think that you have to have been a board member or a trustee before. For whoever we select, we will provide a full induction and help you understand the role and responsibilities of being on a board and we will shape the way we hold meetings and run the board to meet the access requirements of its members.

We are looking for people with experience in the following areas:

  • marketing and branding
  • legal
  • policy
  • networks (ideally outside of the arts / creative sector)
  • senior leadership within Local Authorities

We also need to appoint a Treasurer for our charity as well as a Secretary.

Trustees are not paid, but all reasonable expenses are covered. Appointments are for three years, in the first instance. We are based in Gateshead, however for the foreseeable future and in light of Covid-19 we will use video conferencing for Board Meetings, meetings and training for Trustees. Long term, this is also a way for us to support accessibility, to invite participation from trustees nationally and to save on our carbon footprint.

Keen to apply?
You can tell us about you and your experience, and how this would be of value to Blue Cabin and its future in one or more of the following ways:

  • A letter (no more than 5 pages long)
  • A CV
  • A video or audio message (5 mins long)
  • A Power Point Presentation (no more than 15 pages long)
  • Any other way you choose

Send this information to by Friday 23rd October.

Please include the names of 2 referees you would be happy for us to contact within the email.

Interested in an initial conversation?
If you would like an informal and confidential discussion regarding the role before making the decision to apply, please contact our Executive Director, Jenny Young by emailing

Next steps
We will be in touch by Friday the 6th November to let you know whether we would like to take your application to the next stage.

If your skills and experience are what we’re looking for we will invite you to a virtual conversation via Zoom with the Chair (Adam), our Director (Jenny) and our HR consultant (Steve). This will be during the week of 9-13 November.

Trustee appointments will be made subject to satisfactory references and a declaration of any interests you hold. Trustees are also required to have an Enhanced DBS check for the child workforce. If you don’t already have a DBS certificate this can be arranged through Blue Cabin.

If you are appointed, your first Trustee meeting will be in December 2020. We will also develop an induction programme for new Trustees too. Dates for this will be confirmed after appointments are made.

We look forward to hearing from you!
