The Unicorn Theatre, the UK’s leading theatre for young audiences, is seeking to appoint a new Chair to its Board from early 2021.

The Theatre is subsidised by Arts Council England and is a National Portfolio Organisation. It produces an ambitious and exciting programme of work for children aged from 6 months to 18 years. Founded by Caryl Jenner in 1947 and located in its purpose-built home in Tooley Street in central London since 2005, its continuing mission is to offer engaging and enriching theatre experiences to children of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

The appointment of the new Chair will take place at an important time for the theatre, as it responds to the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic and develops its new strategy to determine the future shape and focus of the organisation. Providing appropriate leadership to the Board and supporting recent governance changes to streamline operations, the new Chair will be instrumental through their support and provocation of the Executive, through their engagement with the Theatre’s work and fundraising activities, in ensuring that this unique organisation is best able to inspire generations of young people long into the future.

In the new Chair, the Unicorn Theatre seeks candidates with a keen interest in young people and the benefit theatre can offer to children, including those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with high quality cultural experiences. They may already have been involved in the world of theatre – but may equally be committed to young people and their opportunity to experience the arts – whether as funders, educationalists or those working in the creative or other industries.

This is an important opportunity for those passionate about making a difference to the lives of children and to the UK’s cultural landscape.
