Disability Arts Online in partnership with Pervasive Media Studio will be hosting a BSL-interpreted and captioned livestream of Chisato Minamimura’s Scored in Silence – Documenting Deaf Perspectives event at Watershed Bristol 27 September 13:00 – 14:00. The livestream will be available on this page.
The event will see Chisato Minamimura discussing ‘Scored in Silence’, her latest digital artwork. ‘Scored in Silence’ mixes sound, vibration and projection to convey the experiences of the deaf hibakusha, survivors of the A-Bombs that fell in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 – telling the story of what happened to them at the time and in the decades that followed.
Audio-described excerpt Scored in Silence available here:
‘Scored in Silence’ has been developed alongside Jon Armstrong (lighting/projection) who will be joining Chisato at the lunchtime talk, Danny Bright (sound/vibration) and Dave Packer (animation) produced by Sarah Pickthall who will facilitate a Q&A. Online audiences can also join in with the Q&A via the livestream by tweeting using the hashtag #ScoredInSilence or by joining the discussion thread on the Disability Arts Online Facebook Group.
Scored in Silence employs Woojer© vibration straps worn on the body for D/deaf and hearing audience members to feel the haunting soundscape and vibrational composition. The work also employs Bristol-based Holo-Gauze© who worked with Chisato to produce projection material that meshes her sign mime with animation in a new form, part lecture, part performance. Chisato will be showing extracts of the work for a handful of audience members to view with Woojers.
The work has been developed alongside partners VibraFusionLab in Ontario, Canada and was selected for the British Council Edinburgh Fringe Festival Showcase in August 2019.
“Minamimura’s ability to conjure deft emotional landscape is without peer.” Ian Abbott.
A smaller scale film of the work with 10 Woojers, designed for screening in a range of museum, gallery and cinema spaces will be available from October 2019.
Scored in Silence will tour globally in 2020/21. The work is supported by Arts Council England, British Council, Canada Council and The Great Britain Saskawa Foundation with in kind support from Woojer©.
I’m not able to cone -to live stream , will a recorded version be available?
My question, exactly – will it be recorded? I’m really keen to see it but not able to see the live stream, either.
Thanks for asking. I will speak to the tech team today to ensure a copy remains available – it will be embedded in this article when it’s ready.
Too often art is justified by the idea that it hs to be ‘healing’ in some way. Not that it can’t be an aspect of making art – but it seems to me to diminish what art is about. It was good to see Chisato revoke the idea that Scored in Silence was ‘healing’ for the deaf hibakashi who she engaged with in telling their stories. #ScoredInSilence
It’s interesting how UK art historically has influenced manga. Scored in Silence seems to me to have a manga aesthetic about it and I was left wondering if Chisato had anything to add to that observation? #ScoredInSilence
