This month, Disability Arts Online’s Assistant Editor Joe Turnbull chats with writer/filmmaker, Jessica Secmezsoy-Urquhart about their PhD research into the Royal Courts of the Renaissance Period and the role that disability played during the era.

Jessica Secmezsoy-Urquhart is an autistic, disabled, working-class, queer and non-binary PhD historian from a Scottish and Turkish background. Their research focuses on disabled court fools and wonders (dwarfs and giants) at the Renaissance royal courts of England and Scotland. They are a writer, produce content including history topics on BBC The Social and TikTok and have just began submitting their first short film, Constant Companion, to film festivals.
